Letter #10

Dear Reader,

I have been into the Place Beyond. It is bigger than my territory and the New Place put together, as I found out when I explored the perimeter. It must be where the Pets go when they are not here. No wonder they spend their time there; it is full of first-rate hiding places.

The best is a long, unlit space called a Supply Closet, which I discovered by squeezing through a narrow opening. In this uncharted territory, I had to clamber over or crawl under a number of challenging large objects to reach the farthest darkest corner. Talk about privacy! I hunkered down to weigh its advantages. I was asking myself how I could communicate to the Pets that they were to bring my water and food there, when I became aware that they were hunting for me. Sweetie was calling out over and over that it was time to go home, but I knew better than to betray my position before I had thought things through.

What a lot of thumping and banging and creaking went on! I heard Sweetie fretting that I had fallen off something and killed myself, but I was unmoved.

Finally, she said: "The door of the supply closet is open a crack. I'll look in there."

I tried to stay still but my rump was falling asleep, and I couldn't help but shift position a little. As a result, Sweetie shone a light in my face and called out, "She's in here!"

Hun barged in, crashing into the obstacles I'd so had easily slipped under. He said some unfamiliar words under his breath, but I did not hear them clearly enough to write them here.

I simply did not want to leave, but I was in a corner and there was nowhere else to go. Hun's big paw came down and I - I am ashamed to say - threw the biggest tantrum of my whole life.

I SQUARWKED! I squarwked and I squarwked and I squarwked without taking a breath, all the way back to my territory. I also wriggled and twisted with all my might to break free. It should have been clear to Them that I had no desire to return home, but They were either too stupid or hard-hearted to pay attention. Finding new food in my dish when I returned home cut short my protests. However, I am determined to get back into the Supply Closet the next time I visit the Place Beyond.
