Letter #17

Dear Reader,

There is a High Place up above the New Place. Sweetie lifts me and sets me down to explore it. I have already come across a number of items that strike me as the raw material of art. It is filled with many objects to climb over or wiggle through, but Sweetie keeps too close an eye on me when I am exploring. She can be quite tedious:

"Shirley! You'd better not be chewing those wires!"

Actually, it is rather boring there since there are no really good hiding places. I don't know why she spends so much time playing with her stuff up there. It's all inedible. Well, as Mother used to say: Simple pleasures for simple minds.

Later...

You must realize by now that I am quite an Ingenious Hamster. What tantalized me about the High Place was that I had to wait for Sweetie to lift me up and put me there. She had moved away the box that I used to climb on to the wire roof of my territory so that I could not run along the open tube. Surely there must be a way for me to get there myself. Well, there was! I found I could climb up some bins, leap onto a projecting piece of wood and then jump into the tube. Above the tube was a hole hidden from Sweetie's view. With my powerful forelegs I hoisted myself through the hole and found myself in the High Place. I came out from hiding and jumped down on Sweetie's fingers which were clicking away.

I don't think she likes surprises.

By the way, I have deduced that Sweetie and Hun have provided homes for other Hamsters before me. They had very peculiar names - John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe! I heard Sweetie say that I walk like a combination of the two.
