Letter #21

Dear Reader,

Last night Sweetie let me have the run of the Place Beyond. She stayed in the New Place, long past the time she usually leaves. I didn't feel like going home that night so I hid myself very cleverly. (I won't say where!) At last she began hunting for me, calling my name. I was quite still. After a while, Hun came to help and I heard them moving heavy objects and both wheedling me to come out. Not tonight! I said to myself, and stayed where I was. Finally, Hun said,

"It's 2:00 o'clock. We can look for her in the morning."

"What if she's trapped behind something?"

Sweetie decided to sleep on the sofa cushions on the floor, saying she was afraid of squashing me if I was somehow in the sofa. I was rather touched, but not enough to give up my plan of camping out overnight. I must say, she would not have been much use to me if I had been trapped behind something and was scrabbling to get out. I crept past her a couple of times during the night, and she was sleeping as soundly as a Hamster.

This morning Hun found me in the Supply Closet, but by then I was sleepy and quite willing to go back to my own nest.
