Letter #20

Dear Reader,

Some time has passed. I have had such a dreadful experience that I am still shaking.

Tonight Sweetie lifted me out into the New Place, and something happened that has never happened before. The wall near the supply closet had disappeared!

How could I pass up this opportunity to explore? With loaded pouches, I crept off quietly, hugging the walls. It was dark everywhere so I did not have to cross any bright, open spaces. The walls I followed went this way and that, and I came to far more corners than I had in either the New Place or the Place Beyond. I also came to a great many kinds of floors, including some slick ones that chilled my paws. I came to a place that reminded me of my Sofa and unloaded there so that I could move more lightly.

At first, it was a grand adventure. Then after a while, I began feeling hungry. I decided to return to my cache for a snack. I couldn't find it! Suddenly I realized that I also didn't know which way home was. The ins and outs of all those walls had totally confused me. Lost is not a good feeling. I crept under something large and low and stayed there. I began to wonder whether creatures besides the Pets lived there. What if there was a Cat that the Pets had not told me about! I drew back and shivered. I was hungry and thirsty - and I felt that I needed to use my sand box.

I thought I heard the Pets calling for me in the distance but I was not sure where they were. Being a Hamster with a Vivid Imagination, I had convinced myself that there must be a Cat! I was frozen to the spot.

After a long, long, long time, a light was shone in my face - and Sweetie called out:

"She's in here! Under the buffet!"

I crept out and climbed promptly into her hand. I didn't mind being taken straight home and dumped into my territory, where my evening meal was waiting.

Now that I look over what I have written, I have to tell you that I wasn't all that scared. I was just trembling a little from hunger. However, you should never go exploring unless you are quite sure there is no Cat.
